Paul Simpson is a partner at Norton McMullen LLP and is a managing director of Norton McMullen Corporate Finance Inc. With over 30 years of professional advisory experience Paul brings a seasoned perspective and integrity to every engagement along with his extensive M&A, audit, tax and finance experience.
Paul graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Commerce in 1984. Upon graduation, he joined Price Waterhouse (now PriceWaterhouseCoopers) where he articled for his CA, which he obtained in 1987. He joined Norton McMullen in 1987 and became a partner in 1990.
He concentrates his practice on financial consulting with owner-operated businesses and providing assurance services to a variety of not-for-profit organizations. Paul also works with start-up and established businesses in need of financing, tax planning and business growth strategies.
Paul has been actively involved in advising owner-operated businesses on merger and acquisition services for over a decade. With his business wisdom and focus on client service, Paul has been a valued advisor to many clients with the sale, purchase or financing of their businesses.
In 2011, Paul co-founded Norton McMullen Corporate Finance Inc. to serve the growing demographic of baby boomer entrepreneurs who, as owner operators of successful businesses, require professional merger and acquisition services to help advise them on the sale of their business as part of their retirement plan. Paul applies the same professional standard of service and confidentiality to the Norton McMullen Corporate Finance practice as is delivered by our regional accounting firm parent company.
Paul’s primary interest is in serving owner-operated businesses with financial advisory services that optimize the value of the business, either as an operating business orat the time of the sale of the business. Paul has perfected his experience with hundreds of company financial reviews. His extensive audit and financial accounting experience (30 years) has given Paul experience in virtually every market sector. He has earned a reputation for his ability to analyze and develop creative, yet practical and effective strategies that will enable business owners to prepare and sell their business, capturing the best possible value for the business owner.

Tom Schmidt ICD-D is a cofounder and Managing Director of Norton McMullen Corporate Finance Inc. He has 35 years of senior executive experience, having lead teams for multinational companies in the life sciences markets in Canada, USA and Internationally. He has operational management experience in both large companies and early stage companies. Tom’s experience has given him a good understanding of key business success factors in a broad range of markets, including life sciences, financial, IT, energy, engineering, distribution and agri-food sectors.
In order to better serve our business owner clients, Tom earned his professional Institute of Corporate Directors designation ICD-D as a graduate of the University of Toronto Rotman Business School program in 2011.
As the senior executive of businesses in the life sciences market sector Tom won awards for corporate performance achievements. He has successfully restructured organizations, launched new products, achieved exceptional market share gains and enhanced company profitability through effective strategic planning, marketing and sales programs.
More recently, Tom has focused on owner-operated private companies, consulting with their entrepreneurial owners. He has successfully helped entrepreneurs accelerate their business growth through innovative financing solutions as well as enhancing shareholder value on the sale of their businesses through good planning, innovative marketing and diligent process management to ensure a successful sale.
Tom’s interest in entrepreneurs and the building of sustainable, successful private businesses has naturally lead to him serving business owners who are planning a change in their business. Having extensive M & A experience on both the buy side and the sell side, Tom is able to support the entrepreneur and the management team through all stages of a transaction. He specializes in M & A services that support private business owners who wish to sell their business, buy a business or finance for growth. He has raised funds for his own companies, and supported others. He understands from his own experience, the strategies and practical needs of both entrepreneurs and investors. His supportive style and hands-on client service approach, coupled with his extensive M & A experience are success factors that ‘get the deal over the finish line’. Closing the deal with both the buyer and the seller maintaining a positive, collaborative working relationship is Tom’s ultimate measure of success.

Tom is actively engaged in serving his community, socially and professionally. He serves on the Board of a large not-for-profit children’s mental health organization as well as a local renewable energy company. He is very interested in corporate governance education for business owners and serves on a local Institute of Corporate Directors branch.

Robert Bezede is a Director of Norton McMullen Corporate Finance Inc. He has a strong background in commercial banking, wealth management, and estate planning. Prior to joining Norton McMullen, Robert spent several years at Roynat Capital Inc., a lower mid-market lender where he funded over $220MM in real estate, cash flow, and mezzanine loans working with various strategic and financial investors to structure and close M&A transactions. Robert started his career in the wealth management space working for a boutique Toronto-based wealth management firm supporting high net-worth clients and their estate planning needs.
Robert’s passion for finance and entrepreneurship has naturally lead him to serving business owners in the lower mid-market space allowing him to provide diligent and uncompromised advice to help business owners achieve their financial and personal goals. Robert works on supporting existing clients in preparing detailed confidential information memorandums and financial models while also focusing on originating transactions and communicating with prospective buyers.
Robert is passionate about education and mentorship having been a former little brother in the Big Brothers Big Sisters mentorship program. Recently, Robert has been focused on setting up the Pragya Narula Memorial endowment fund supporting University of Toronto students who show a demonstrated excellence and commitment to their community through leadership and mentorship.
